Humans are curious. For hundreds of years, we have been trying to find new information. One way we have done that is by exploring. To explore means to seek knowledge. It means to go to new places and record what you find.
Why do we explore? We explore to investigate the world around us. We explore to broaden our horizons. We explore to become wiser.
There are many items we need to explore. We need food and water. We need a journal to record our findings. We need a compass to navigate.
Technology has made exploration easier. Because of aviation, we can reach new places that were hidden before. It is a great time to be an explorer.
Some people explore because they find it exciting. Others explore for science. Geographers explore to study the Earth and learn about new places. They might study the climate in new places. They might study the water in new places. Their research can help us understand our own planet.
There are lots of famous explorers. Marco Polo was an explorer from Italy. In 1271, he left Italy and went to China. He wrote about his journey. He was one of the first documented explorers. He recorded his observations in a journal.
Two Italian climbers were the first explorers to reach the summit of K2. K2 is the second tallest mountain in the world. They reached the top on July 31, 1954. K2 is known as the most difficult mountain to climb. It is more difficult than Mount Everest. The mountain was not climbed for another 23 years. It shows how hard the climb is.
Not all explorers are from the past. There are many people who explore today. Albert Lin is a famous modern explorer. He is a television presenter and works at a university. He explores lost cities. In 2016, he was in a car accident. He lost his leg. But that did not stop him from exploring. He continues to explore as an amputee. He can hike and climb with his prosthetic leg.
Jessica Watson is an amazing modern explorer. She was inspired by other explorers before her. She read about people sailing around the world. She wanted to do the same.
In 2009, she set off to sail around the world. On March 15, 2010, she arrived in Sydney. She had sailed around the world. It took her 210 days. Do you know the most amazing thing? She was just 16 years old.
Humans will always explore. We will explore land. We will explore the ocean. We will explore space. Where will you explore?
