Do you know what breakdancing is? It is a kind of street dance. It is a hip-hop-style dance. It is a kind of dance with a lot of athletic moves. The breakers move their bodies to the rhythm of the music. The music for breakdancing is very important. It must have the right tempo.
Breakdancing started in the 1960s to 1980s in America. The youths living in New York City started this dance style.
Have you seen some breakdancing moves? There are four main types of breakdancing moves. They are toprock, downrock, power moves, and freezes.
The first one is called toprock. Toprock is a move with a lot of foot movements. You do these foot movements while you are standing. You can put in your own style too.
The next move is called downrock. The dancers do all the movements on the floor. You might have to kick your feet out. You might have to bring your feet back in.
The third move is called power move. There is a lot of spinning or rotating the body. Some common power moves include the windmill and swipe. When the breaker does the windmill, he or she spins on the ground in a circle. Power moves are not easy.
The final move is called freeze. The breaker stops moving and stays in his or her position. There are different kinds of freezes. Sometimes the dancers will freeze with just their hands touching the ground.
There are many breakdancing competitions each year. Breakers join them and try to get first place. There are one-on-one battles. There are team battles. Breakdancing is part of the Youth Olympic Games. It will also be part of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
Breakers need to keep practicing. They keep practicing their old routines. They need to practice new moves too. When the moves get hard, the breakers practice more. Do you want to be a breaker? You can be a great breakdancer too!
