To get to school, my grandparents tell me that they walked 2 hours each way. They said they walked through rain and snow. They even said it was uphill both ways. For some reason, I don't believe them!
Still, travelling around cities is much easier now than it was in the past. If walking doesn't sound great, you are lucky. We have many more options available.
You could get a lift. Getting a lift means that you go with somebody else in their car. It's a good way of saving gas and the environment. You might travel with somebody you know, or use a rideshare app. It's a safe way to meet new people that travel in the same direction as you.
If you drive, you might choose to use a car share app. Companies have cars that you can use to drive. Then, you leave it at your destination. I use a car share to take day trips. It means I don't need to buy a car to use at the weekend.
If you don't drive, you can use a bike share app. Lots of cities offer bike share systems. It is very good for the environment. The first bike share system was in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in 1965. The city collected bikes, painted them white, and left them around the city for people to use.
If you use a bike share, you won't get stuck in rush hour traffic. Bike lanes mean that you avoid traffic jams. But you still need to follow the rules of the road. Don't forget to stop at traffic lights!
E-scooters are becoming popular in cities. E-scooters are powered by electricity. People who commute on e-scooters avoid the traffic. They also don't get hot and sweaty like cyclists. Is this the best of both worlds?
One of the most popular methods of travel in cities is the subway. Lots of cities have subways. The first underground railway was built in London, England, in 1863. Tokyo has the busiest subway in the world. 3.16 billion people use it every year. That's 8 million people every day!
To use the subway you buy a pass and put money on it. This means that you don't have to use cash. Then, you tap the pass somewhere on the gate. The gate opens and lets you use the subway.
The subway is a great method of transport. It is environmentally friendly and safe. It also doesn't change how a city looks because it is underground.
Technology is changing every part of our lives. We have more options than ever before to get around. I wonder how students will get to school in 50 years time?
