We use and, but, and or to join ideas. And is used to join similar ideas. But is for joining contrasting ideas. Or is for joining alternative ideas:

I don't like onions, but I love carrots.

Susan is a doctor, but she doesn't work at the hospital.

Is Brenda in the living room or the kitchen?

There are three or four customers in the store.
So & Because
Because is for describing reasons. So is for results:

We're eating because we're hungry.

I don't want to go outside because it's raining.

The children are playing, so they're happy.

They are married, so they live together.
