Hi everyone, today we're going to be making um rings um or pendants out of um glass stones and nail polish. And it's really cool, I don't know if you can see I'm wearing a little one right now. Um it's kind of a decorative ring and I have this one set up as a ring too, it's a bigger one which is kind of the fashion right now, the big rings um which is really fun.
And we're making it, the really cool thing is you can actually um match your jewelry with your nail polish that you're wearing if you wanted to, or you can buy inexpensive nail polish and just experiment and change out your jewelry periodically.
So you're going to need um some plain glass beads that you can find at the craft store, um I've even found them at the dollar store. They have a, they're a little bit domed but one side is flat. You'll need um a top coat um of nail polish and then a variety, let me zoom out here, a variety of different nail polishes which I have here.
Um you can do glitter polishes, um you can do just plain glitter, which is what I've kind of experimented um with some of these. I did different layers, like this one in particular I did the top coat, I sprinkled some of the thicker clear glitter on there. Um I did the finer glitter on here and it really is addictive. So once you get started you're going to start playing with different things and you're just not going to be able to stop. I was, I was only going to do I don't know two or three and I just kind of kept going.
So in addition to that stuff and it could be any color that you want um you'll need to have um a ring blank which you could buy at the craft store and then um some type of a very strong glue that can glue glass um and metal and other things. And the, the important thing about the glue is to, is to read the directions. Like this one says it doesn't cure fully for 72 hours. Um it'll be dry in 24, it'll have a really good bond but you want to wait that 72. So kind of plan ahead if you can or, or get a different glue but the stronger ones have a tendency to um have that longer um glue, glue time.
So and if you wanted to make a pendant or maybe a matching pendant to your ring then you'll need a bail that you would glue on the back of it. So I'm going to show you how to do um the actual stones.
Okay, when you get the stone and I don't know if you can see it but you can see how very imperfect um the surface is and the key to um having them look nice and smooth is your top coat. You use your, your clear top coat, whatever brand you want to use is, is fine um and you put that on first because that will help give it more of a um a more level and finished, because here's one that I already put it on. You can see it, it did level it out quite a bit. You'll have a much better surface to work on.
Um I'm going to start with a glitter. I put the top coat on and on some of these what I did, I did the top coat and I sprinkled the glitter right into that very first top coat but I haven't tried this color yet so I thought maybe we'd give this glitter one a try.
So you let that top coat dry, that initial top coat dry and then you go ahead and put um the glitter polish on there. So you put that on and then the thing that's going to take the longest other than that final glue is waiting, waiting for it to dry between the coats. But it is important to let that happen otherwise you start smearing it and um like if I put it on right now the glitter would end up not being evenly dispersed. So we'll let that dry and then we'll come back and put on the next layer.
Now here's two that I've been working on. Um this one I, I ended up dropping into some nail polish or something so it's no big deal, I'll just take some nail polish remover and take it off of the top and it'll be just fine. Um and if you end up messing something up that's no big deal either, take the nail polish remover and you can start over.
Now this one I put on um a couple different colors and then I took a piece of foil and I just squished it on there um and it took part of it off and I kind of like the way that looks and now I'm going to put a darker um background color, oops, a darker background color on there um to finish it off.
So I'll probably end up doing a couple of coats on the back. There we go. See but it's starting to kind of um fill everything in. I'll do one more final coat on there, let this dry and then I'll go over it one more time and then at the end I'll take the clear coat, the clear top coat again and finish it off and then let it completely dry.
Okay, we're back and the, the one with the glitter on there is all dry. So we could put the next coat on. And I was thinking maybe we would do, we'll keep this one kind of simple I think. We'll do this, I have this iridescent bluish green, maybe we'll give that one a shot, see how that looks with that against it.
Goes on pretty clear so in the end you want to do, you might end up doing like one or two or three coats for the final coat depending on how thick everything was just to um get the background really solid before you end up gluing um the bail or the ring, the ring blank on there. And you're going to do the same thing as before, you're going to let it dry and then you're going to just have to wait.
Hang on so you can kind of see it. I don't want to hold it too long or it'll all start to run off. And I'll put another coat on the back of this one which I think is turned out pretty good. While these are drying um we'll do one more coat on this um next time we come back and this one is going to be I think pretty well done except for the top coat. I like the way that one turned out.
So after the final coats of the two that I was showing you, here is, here's the one which I think turned out pretty good. And here is the other one. It's a little more simple um with the plain greenish iridescent background with the glitter and I think that's real pretty too. And you can match your fingernails to it and have it go with your whole outfit and I think that'd be fun. So I hope you, you just take the time and I'd love to see what you do.
