We use the comma to separate words, phrases or clauses in a series.
- He likes rock, hip hop, jazz and country.
- The car drove off the road, through the fence, down the hill and into a clearing.
- France is famous for its pastry, Italy is renowned for its pasta and Switzerland is known for its chocolate.

We use the comma to link two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction (and, but, so, or, for, nor, yet)
- The service at this restaurant is great, and the food is delicious.
- The government has made an effort to promote healthy eating, but it seems to have made little difference.
