Do you know what a hummingbird is? It is a kind of bird.
Hummingbirds make a special sound. They sound like they are humming.
But they do not hum with their beaks. They hum with their wings.
Their wings beat 50 times in one second. Their wings beat so fast that they make a noise. The noise sounds like a hum.
They are good fliers. Most birds can only fly forward. But the hummingbird is different. It can fly backwards. It can fly upside down.
Hummingbirds have long tongues. They use their tongues to drink nectar from flowers. You can feed them in your garden too. You can feed them sugar water. It gives them energy.
They must eat a lot. They eat every 10-15 minutes. They visit 2,000 flowers a day!
They have strong wings. They use their wings to stay in the air.
A hummingbird is a small bird. It is around 10 cm long. The smallest is 5 cm. It is called the bee hummingbird.
They are also light. They weigh only 3 grams. A coin weighs 4.5 grams.
Hummingbirds are small but strong. Their hearts can beat 1,200 times every minute. They take a breath 250 times every minute.
Hummingbirds do not like the heat. They eat less when it is hot. They fly less when it is hot.
Hummingbirds are beautiful. But not many people see them. They are only found in the Americas. Have you seen one?
