NASA teaches many astronauts. They need to be very smart. They need to practice before they go to space. They have to learn how to be in space. Space is very different from Earth.
Astronauts have to practice moving in space. They have to practice eating in space. They go into a simulator. They practice flying to space with a machine.
How do astronauts go to space? They need to wear spacesuits. When the astronauts are ready, they take a space shuttle. A space shuttle takes them to space. The space shuttle launches into space. It goes through our atmosphere.
On July 20th, 1969, the first people landed on the Moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were astronauts. They were the first to step onto the lunar surface. As Armstrong took his first step he said, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."
They left footprints in the Moon's soil. The Moon has no wind. The Moon has no water. Their footprints are still on the Moon today! There is no wind or water to wash them away.
Being an astronaut is a cool job. Many astronauts say Earth is beautiful from space. They spend a lot of time away from home. Being an astronaut can be very dangerous. Do you want to be an astronaut?
