From actor to sniffer dog, it seems that animals can do anything. Maybe your teacher will be replaced by an animal soon! Let's look at the cool ways animals have worked for humans over the years.
Before telephones, getting a message to somebody wasn't easy. One way people sent messages was by pigeons. Post pigeons can fly for hundreds of miles and find their way home.
They have great eyesight. They can remember things they have seen. They remember the position of the sun. Sometimes they follow roads to travel.
People attached messages to pigeons' legs. Pigeons were used to send messages in the war. They saved lots of lives by flying with messages.
Playing fetch every evening sounds like a dream job for a dog. Well bat dogs do just that. Bat dogs work at baseball fields. They fetch bats and balls that have been dropped by the players.
Sometimes, the bat dogs become famous. People love the dogs as much as the players! Who can blame them?
While some dogs are scared of the vacuum, others work around loud noises all day. Birds around airports can cause problems. If an airplane hits a bird, it can damage the plane. It can be very dangerous. That is where dogs can help us.
Dogs are given the job of chasing away birds on runways. They keep birds away and keep it safe for the airplanes. The dogs wear special doggles to protect their eyes from the wind. They wear a jacket to show that they are working. With such good fashion sense, this dog could be a model too!
Many famous tennis players come to Wimbledon. But there is one face you might not recognize. Rufus the hawk is a special worker at Wimbledon. His job is to scare away pigeons. There are many pigeons that might bother or distract the players. Thanks to Rufus, the players can play tennis in peace!
This next job isn't as great as the others. Until 1986, miners took canaries down into coal mines. Their service kept the miners safe.
There were dangerous gasses in the mines. The birds could detect the gasses in the air. If there was too much of the gas, the birds would die. This gave the miners a warning. It was time for them to leave.
This became illegal in 1986. The birds were replaced by technology. They helped save the lives of lots of miners.
Humans need animals. They keep us safe and make our life better. If your pet has a job or not, show it how much it means to you!
